Downer NZ’s purchase of The Roading Company

On May 1st 2019 The Roading Company (TRC) will be joining Downer NZ. Downer has acquired the assets and business of TRC and we will be joining the Transport Technology stream in Downer’s Transport Services.

Fletcher Cranfield, our General Manager who continues to lead TRC at Downer, explained that “this is an exciting time for our business and a great opportunity for us to broaden our expertise and work with Downer to offer an even greater level of service to our clients.”

“TRC is a proud Kiwi company that provides specialist road construction and mobile crushing services across the Otago/Southland region. This is a great fit with Downer and we look forward to working with the team. We will be keeping the TRC brand and running the company as its own independent unit,” said Murray Robertson (GM Transport Technology).

TRC has been operating in Southland and Otago for 16 years and has a very experienced team with strong project and contract management expertise. The team at TRC pride themselves on working collaboratively with clients, engineers and the wider project team to achieve best for project results. Downer Executive GM Craig West cemented the value of the joining of the two businesses and highlighted “that Downer has a long and proud history in the South Island that can be traced back more than a century.”

The Roading Company look forward to working with you all.

Pleasing Interim PACE reports with high scores have been received for recent projects completed for NZTA. Comments from the client representative for a road rehabilitation project we completed included:
“The Roading Company and its staff exhibited a high level of competency throughout the contract period. Their efficient work saw the project completed slightly ahead of programme. Traffic control was well managed and amended their plan to suit conditions particularly as the busy Thornbury/Waimatuku intersection. Overall the project was well managed and was completed within the available budget.”

Following the successful upgrade of the Lake Esplanade & Beach Street project in Queenstown, the project team was chosen as a finalist in the 2011 NZ Roading Excellence Awards. The QLDC CEO wrote the following in support of this nomination:
“The Lake Esplanade and Beach Street Upgrade project represented one of the most high profile projects undertaken by our Council in recent years. The site is unique in terms of the diversity of its customers and includes hoteliers, visitors, residents, tourism operators, all day parking and the flow of some 10,000 cars, buses and trucks per day. Lake Esplanade serves as the only link to the busy suburbs of Fernhill and Sunshine Bay and as such, is a critical route. In addition, the site and adjacent recreation reserve are important amenity features on our lakefront and the aesthetics of the finished project had to fit with that environment.
The project has been received as a tremendous success by the community and we are delighted with the results. Throughout the works the project team consistently put the customer first. This was evident in their planning, public consultation and the methodology with which they undertook the work. During the project the site was perceived as busy but highly organised, no mean feat given the complexity of the work and the challenges presented along the way. The speed at which the project was completed was also very impressive. It is a credit to the team that no complaints were received about the traffic management or the project in general. Since its completion, positive feedback has been received from road users, business operators and residents alike. The project stands as an example of what can be achieved with the right team in place, focused on delivering excellence and great value.”

We continue to strive to meet our client expectations on all projects throughout the regions over the construction season.
